Swainson’s Warbler Tours

From mid-April through late June Darrell will offer tours to the nesting grounds of Swainson’s Warblers near Chappell Hill. Trip participants will arrive at the nesting grounds at 7:30AM. Darrell will take individuals and groups of no more than 5 to the nesting site. Groups will be limited in numbers, as Swainson’s Warblers are very secretive birds. Swainson’s Warblers sing actively in the morning. Participants will bird the Swainson’s Warbler habitat for two plus hours. Pileated Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher, and Indigo Bunting are just a few species which also nest at the Swainson’s Warbler site. Cost is $35.00 per person.

Winter Sparrows of Washington County                    Sunday,  January 11, 2009

Join Darrell as we search for wintering sparrows in the Chappell Hill and Washington area. Up to 14 species of sparrows and their allies are possible during this tour. Ducks, geese, cranes, and several species of wrens and other woodland birds are also possible. The duration of this trip is 8AM till about 2PM. The cost is $35.00 per person and is limited to 10 participants. Meet Darrell by 8AM in the parking lot of the Shell station at the intersection of US290 and FM1155 in Chappell Hill. We will carpool from there.

Bring drinking water, snacks, and pack a lunch.

Lower Rio Grande Valley          Friday, January 23- Wednesday, January 28, 2009

The rate for this tour is $595.00 per person with a limit of 8 participants and includes the following:

1. Transportation will be provided
2. 5 nights lodging at the Alamo Inn
3. The place of lodging can wash clothes for participants
4. Breakfast
5. Most lunches
6. Free happy hour at the place of lodging whenever the group wants to have it  daily. Wine, beer, and sodas will be available.
7. All entry fees to state parks, sanctuaries, nature centers, and ranches
8. My guide fee for 5 days birding

Darrell will meet participants on the northwest side of Houston on the morning of January 23rd at 8:30AM and travel in a 15-passenger van. On the way down to the valley we will stop at the Aransas NWR to see the Whooping Cranes. We should see well over 100 species during the tour in the valley. We will start our way back to Houston on the morning of January 28th.

We did not include the cost for dinner, as it varies in each valley city. That will be our big sit-down meal where we can talk about the day and what's scheduled for the next day.

We will give participants the option of flying to the valley on the 23rd and picking them up there and dropping them off at the airport on January 28th. There are commercial flights into and out of Harlingen, Brownsville, and McAllen.

Possibilities for the tour include: Muscovy Duck, Hooked-billed Kite, Harris's Hawk, Gray Hawk, Aplomado and Peregrine Falcon, Red-billed Pigeon, Red-crowned Parrot, Groove-billed Ani, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Elf Owl, Common Paraque, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, 3 kingfisher species, Green Jay, Chihuahuan Raven, Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Great Kiskadee, Tropical Kingbird, Verdin, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Clay-colored Thrush(formerly Robin), Gray-crowned Yellowthroat, White-collared Seedeater, and at least 3 oriole species. There are always Mexican vagrants showing up in the valley during the winter season such as White-throated Thrush(formerly Robin), Brown Jay, and

Blue Bunting. Several species of wood warblers overwinter in the LRGV, including rarities such as Townsend's Warbler and Hermit Warbler.

Individual half-day and full day guide services

Darrell's guide services are available to individuals at the rate of $75.00 for a half-day and $150.00 for a full day locally(Brazos Valley).

Darrell's services are available to individuals at a rate of $85.00 for a half-day for trips outside the Brazos Valley. His guide service rate for trips outside of the Brazos Valley is $175.00 for a full day.
